There are almost as many different types of puzzles out there as there are people. This is because everyone thinks a little bit differently and so everyone who creates puzzles or solves them challenges themselves a little bit differently. Still, there are a number of well-known and popular types of puzzles out there for you to explore. The options include:
- Crossword Puzzles—This is a familiar puzzle, if not iconic puzzle, for most of us. It is comprised of a grid of white and shaded squares as well as a series of clues. To solve the puzzle, you must correctly fill in the grid with the words that matches the given clues. This can be done either through knowledge or deduction.
- Sudoku—This puzzle reached international popularity only recently, but since then it has been the most popular puzzle option around. Sudoku is a numeric puzzle usually comprised of a 9×9 grid then broken down into a smaller 3×3 grid. To solve the puzzle you must fill the grid with numbers so that all of the numbers from 1-9 appear in each row, column, and 3×3 grid. There are numerous variants to this puzzle game.
- Word Searches—This is a word puzzle in which you are given a list of words to look for within a grid of jumbled letter. To solve the puzzle, you must find and identify all of the words on your list within the grid. They can be arranged along the horizontal or vertical axis of the grid. Sometimes they are also arranged diagonally or even backward, but they are never broken up or bent along multiple axes.
- Word Scrambles and Anagrams—These types of word puzzles are related. In the first, the letters of a word or phrase are jumbled together and it is up to the puzzle solver to identify the original word. In the second, the letters of the word or phrase are used to create new words and phrases.

Puzzle solving is more than just an entertaining leisure activity. Humanity has made its greatest strides by identifying and then solving puzzles of all kinds.
