Get Your Kids Interested in Crossword Puzzles

Crossword puzzles can be a great way to teach your child how to read, spell and learn definitions of many words. Children who naturally like to read and enjoy a challenge will love to do crossword puzzles but those who prefer to do other things might need some encouragement. In order to get your kids interested in crossword puzzles, you will first have to find puzzles which are age-appropriate and not too difficult or they will get discouraged and find more reasons for not wanting to do crossword puzzles. However, the first time a child finishes a crossword puzzle all by themselves, this sense of accomplishment will compel them to attempt more puzzles and complete them on their own.

Finding Crosswords

You can find age-appropriate crosswords on the internet by doing a search for website offering free printable crosswords. If your kids are interested in sports, dinosaurs or even Spongebob Squarepants, you can find crosswords which contain words that pertain to these certain subjects, which will interest your kids enough to at least start trying to do crossword puzzles. Puzzles which contain generic words—like the kind adults do—won’t generate familiarity or enthusiasm so try to find puzzles which have funny themes and humorous clues. There are even crossword puzzles for children who are four to six years old which use pictures or images as clues to definitions. Starting them out early with crosswords like these can maintain their interest in doing crossword puzzles as they get older, which are pose more of a challenge.

Making Your Own

If you can’t find any crossword puzzles which may interest your child, you can always create your own puzzles using words and clues that you think could entice him. For a child who doesn’t find words interesting, however, you might have to resort to a little coaxing and the possibility of a reward if he finishes a crossword. Don’t make it drudgery or force him to do a puzzle; that sort of game plan will just generate a rebellious attitude. Instead, try turning it into a race between you and him or even the whole family, with the adults trying to finish a harder crossword puzzle while the kids do puzzles that are suited to their ability.

Crossword puzzles are a fun and relaxing way to spend a rainy afternoon, and can also contribute to expanding a child’s vocabulary, spelling and language level.
